No, this is not a piece of fiction, or something that I saw in the movies. I know most of you are asking yourselves how did she do that when you think of the ‘small’ loans here and there that you have been given by friends and relatives and have nothing to show for them.
I am sure, most of us are asking who is Barbara Corcoran, and how did she manage to turn a $1,000 dollar loan into a $66 million dollar empire. Well, was born March 10, 1949 in Edgewater, New Jersey)and is an American businesswoman, investor, speaker, business consultant, syndicated columnist, author, and television personality. As a television personality, she is a “Shark” investor on ABC’s Shark Tank.
She graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas College with a degree in education in 1971. After graduation, she taught school for a year, but soon moved on working various jobs including a side job renting apartments in New York City. She wanted to be her own boss, and in 1973 co-founded a real estate business called The Corcoran Group with her wealthy boyfriend, who fronted a $1000 loan (approximately $5,000, inflation-adjusted). In the mid-1970s she also began publishing The Corcoran Report on real estate data trends in New York City In 2001, Corcoran sold her business to the giant NRT Incorporated for $66 million.
According to her website, http://barbaracorcoran.com/, Barbara Corcoran’s credentials include straight D’s in high school and college and twenty jobs by the time she turned twenty-three. It was her next job that would make her one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the country when she took a $1000 loan to start The Corcoran Group. At the time she got her loan, she was working as a waitress and was tired of the job. She kept on complaining and her boyfriend then, suggested to her to try out the real estate market, since he thought that she had a nice personality. The rest is history, as they say for she went on to sell the Corcoran Group for $66 million dollars. Sounds like something that should be in a movie or a work of fiction, but she has lived it.
Her thoughts and ideas on her journey as an entrepreneur are shown in this video interview.
There’s an excellent interview of Barbara (Corcoran Group founder) on

for anyone interested in more of her and how she built her business.
She is such an inspiration! I’m out of college and it’s been a challenge finding a job. Reading stories like these give me the will power to keep pushing on and to know that I don’t have to be employed to earn money. Even the fact that she got D’s in school and yet she made it this far just goes to show that we can all make it if we have passion and motivation.
